Glucose Tablets

In a state of ketosis, I find it near impossible to maintain or sustain any type of physical exercise.  Since I am currently deficiting over 1000 calories a day in ketosis, it makes no sense to perform any exercise other than strength training (to maintain muscle mass and neural efficiency.  Since I am a huge fan of finding out how naturally handicapped populations cope with adverse conditions, I looked into glucose tablets.  These tablets are found at all drug stores and are designed for diabetic emergencies.  When a diabetic's glucose falls dangerously low, they can boost their blood glucose concentration with a fast acting tablet.  Because an individual tablet is 15 calories, I don't have to worry much about this affecting my long term weight loss as 15 calories is equivalent to walking .15 miles (like the amount of walking you have each day going to the bathroom.

Some recommendations of ketosis based workouts suggest that 5-10 g of BCAA's be consumed before the workout session, however since I am taking BCAA's for the majority of the ketosis state I find it redundant when it comes to an energy surge.

Since pure glucose has a GI of 138 we can count on for fast acting hyperglycemia.  To give you an idea about the sugar rush, ice cream is around a GI of 90-100.  By forcing myself into short term glucose saturation, weight lifting sets become possible and the effect to the diet is neutralized.  With about 3-4 tablets in a workout, I still will burn off all calories before I complete the session.

While Lyle Macdonald and others have discussed this method before I have found two uses of it that they did not mention in their books.  The glucose tablets seem to boost the digestion of caffeine in a ketosis state.  Taking caffeine in a ketosis state, I was not feeling a surge of heat or energy, but when stacked with a glucose tablet, I felt the affects more completely.  Studies into this will have to confirm or deny my experience.

Also, after looking at the literature, BAT when activated utilizes 50% fatty acid and 30% glucose when activated in NST (non-shivering thermogenisis).  By taking a glucose tablet before BAT stimulations (ie. cold baths), I am protein sparing and thus will preserve my muscle mass better.  With 2 tablets per day, I can maintain fewer than 10g of carbs in ketosis.

  1. Wow. You sure have some education behind you. Just what I like to see when submitting a comment. Are you (or were you) in the 20g carb. range, or higher? Is this a life plan or just until fat loss (or experiment) is reached? Did the tabs work immediately, as in less than 15 minutes? I've tried low carb and like it but it seems to only work on around 20g for me (so far) or not at all. I probably should have given it a longer experience but the workouts were so brutal, I just couldn't go on. Not just the energy loss but the soreness lasted way beyond normal and the potential for injury was just too high for me to fool around with. Any thoughts you want to share with me would be appreciated.--Thanks.
